An historic Western Isles hotel has shut.

A notice on the Rodel Hotel's website said the business was closed.

Historic island hotel closes

22 July 2016

The note read: “We will be in touch regarding any outstanding booking matters.

“We would like to thank everyone who has come to visit us here in Rodel, to stay, dine or sail into our harbour.

“It has been a pleasure to share Rodel with you and we thank you for your custom.”

The premises in South Harris has been a hotel since 1925 and a shooting lodge before that.

In February 1850, the property played centre stage to romantic bedlam worthy of a Shakespeare play except for its happy-ever-after fairytale ending.

Donald MacDonald, and his betrothed, Jessie, eloped in South Uist, on Valentine’s Day, to thwart her family's attempts for an arranged marriage to another man.

But Jessie was caught and locked up in Rodel House by her uncle. Donald ended up on trial for breaking-in to rescue her. He was acquitted and the couple married.

The hotel is presently being marketed for sale with a guide price of £625,000, reduced from £800,000.

Salmon fisheries are available to purchase separately.

The building was constructed around 1781 by ship’s master Captain Alexander MacLeod, of Berneray, who bought all of Harris with his fortune made in the East India trade.

Jock MacCallum, grandfather of present hotelier, turned it into a hotel in 1925.

For decades it was the only place in Britain where a rare dram of the Royal Household whisky could be acquired.

The Royal Family landed ashore there during the Queen’s tour of the Hebrides in 1956.
