Scotland’s towns, city centres and places of historic interest are set to benefit from a £10 million funding boost from Historic Environment Scotland (HES).

The new lead heritage body for the historic environment made the announcement at the launch of the organisation’s first corporate plan.

HES replaces Historic Scotland and the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland.

The funding, which is distributed through its conservation area regeneration scheme encourages local councils to restore the built environment whilst helping to stimulate economic regeneration.

Stornoway benefited from an earlier round of the funding. That project, completed in June 2013, resulted in the renovation of the Stornoway Town Hall, repaving in Cromwell Street and repairs to the Lews Castle sea walls. There were also 22 property grants awarded for the repair and restoration of historical and architectural detail.
