Highlands and Islands Labour MSP, Rhoda Grant,  has raised "deeply concerns" over the proposed closure of the Hillcrest children's and respite centre in Stornoway.

The plan has left parents of children with additional support needs uncertain of their children's future care provision and respite needs.

A Comhairle proposal to radically change residential care arrangements for children is likely to lead to the closure of the Hillcrest care home in Stornoway with the potential loss of 28 jobs.

Affected families are furious over the plan to save £350,000 to place all children all children currently in residential care at the Action for Children-operated facility into foster care.

Parents say local respite care available at the facility is a very valuable service as it provides a short temporary break from caring for a child with additional special needs and helps them manage the rest of the time.

Rhoda Grant said: “I have been in contact with parents whose children use the facilities at Hillcrest and they are really concerned about what this could mean for their children's future care needs.

"It is not clear at this stage what alternative provision would be put in place."

Mrs Grant continued: “I absolutely appreciate the unprecedented cuts that are being wielded on councils throughout Scotland from the government at Holyrood and councils are being asked to do the impossible.

"However parents are deeply concerned about this news and I am seeking an urgent meeting with the leader of the Comhairle to discuss these concerns and to ask what discussions are being held with parents, service providers and affected staff.”
