A petition, calling for the Scottish Government to abandon it plans to abolish the board of Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE), has been lodged at the Scottish Parliament.

A single “overarching board” will replace individual agency boards” for HIE, Scottish Enterprise, Skills Development Scotland and the Scottish Funding Council.

Former Labour MSP, Maureen Macmillan, has lodged the petition at the parliament’s petition committee.

It warns the change will be “detrimental to the economy and communities” of the Highlands and Islands and “fragment the focus” of the board and risk relegating the needs of the region behind the more heavily populated parts of Scotland.
