Board members of Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) are hearing first hand about
the challenges and opportunities facing island businesses.
The organisation is undertaking a series of visits to business around Lewis and Harris
over three days this week, many of which have received investment from the development
agency.
Following a formal board meeting at Talla na Mara in Harris this morning, members
toured the Tarbert distillery.
This evening, islanders involved in community and commercial enterprises are gathering
at the Lews Castle to relate their difficulties encountered, experiences and aspirations
of being based in the Western Isles.
Visits on Tuesday include Wee Studio in Ness and businesses in Breasclete and Stornoway.
They will also visit Stornoway’s new deep water port in which the agency invested
£10 million.
This is the first HIE board visit since they went to Uist in April 2019 before lockdown.
However, virtual engagement sessions have been held with businesses and community
groups every year with board members since then.
