SSEN Distribution chartered a helicopter to transport poles to the new phone mast on Ben Kenneth, serving Lochboisdale, South Uist.

The poles were slung underneath the aircraft as it ferried them from near houses in Lasgair to the hillside site.

A spokesperson from SSEN Distribution said: “We always strive to be a good neighbour, and we’d like to thank our customers for their patience as our teams connect the new telecoms mast on Ben Kenneth to the local network, a project which involves building a 2.2km overhead line and installing 34 wooden poles.

“Delivering poles on South Uist can sometimes be challenging, given the remote location and so, as with similar projects in recent times, we’ve brought them to site by helicopter.

“As with any job we undertake - no matter its size - a full risk assessment for this project has been carried out at the planning stage and the route being flown is in line with standard industry procedures for such work, with the pilot having a clear line-of-sight at all times.”
