Hebrides News

Hebrides.net has competed a major network upgrade to connect it to the new sub-sea fibre linking the Western Isles to the mainland.

Until now the service used a microwave link across the Minch.

This enhanced connectivity will see faster speeds services to users on the Connected Communities network which relays signals to computer users not linked by the main commercial telecom companies.

New 2Mb/s & 4Mb/s residential services will be released in two phases.

The first launch is now underway and offers all users the option to double their speed free of charge.

Next month, customers to switch to any new speed and transfer allowance combination.

Both phases are being rolled out on an island by
Island basis, working from south to north.

Stuart Glendinning of Hebrides.net said: "This roll-out underlines our long term commitment to delivering
broadband to the Western Isles.

"We expect that in the coming years, further network upgrades will facilitate the roll-out of super-fast
Hebrides.net services of 30Mb/s or more, bringing the Islands in-line with broadband speeds across the towns and cities of Scotland."
