Date set to remove oil rig from Broad Bay

One of the world's largest heavy lift ships has arrived in Lewis after being chartered to pick up the Transocean Winner oil rig.

A small flow of spectators dotted the coastline to seek the first glimpse of the Hawk as she approached Broad Bay on Tuesday night.

The 223 metre long semi-submersible vessel anchored outside the mouth of the bay – two miles north of the oil rig – near the location where the actual loading is due to take place over the weekend.

The Hawk's deck is 157 metres long - about one and a half times the height of Big Ben - and 55 metres wide.

As she arrived her crew were welding metal struts on her deck in preparation for securely fastening the oil rig onboard.

The ship’s deck lights were ablaze to allow the crew to work outside at night.
