Haulage RET is ruled out            10/2/14

Road Equivalent Tariff will not be extended for lorries and commercial vehicles under Independence according to Transport Minister Keith Brown.

Mr Brown said the SNP would keep cheaper ferry fares for passengers and cars, pointing out the scheme provided benefits to island residents.

He indicated that the commercial fare scale was changed so six-metre long vans can gain cheaper fares - the standard car journey rate on island ferries.

However, he ruled out a future RET scheme for lorries.

Mr Brown said there haulage ferry prices were being reviewed to ensure they were fair and consistent across the board.

Highlands MSP Rhoda Grant criticised his comments as demonstrating a “lack of commitment to their own policy” on RET.

Mrs Grant said: “It is becoming clearer and clearer that the SNP stance on RET has been used as a cynical bribe to our island communities. The Transport Minister has now effectively owned up and said as much.”

Rhoda Grant also lodged a motion in the Scottish Parliament condemning the Transport Minister on his position on RET which is marked for members debate.
