Open day to preview plans for new whisky distillery           4/3/14

Harris residents are to get a preview of advance plans for a whisky distillery to be built on the island.

An open day to display proposals of the new Isle of Harris Distillery is being held on Wednesday 5 March, between 9am to 3pm in the Harris Hotel.

The company said the event is to give the community an early opportunity to review the design and other relevant information.

The company behind the enterprise previously said the distillery would be a building of “architectural merit” and incorporate a visitor centre on reclaimed land close to a Harris Tweed shop and the ferry terminal in Tarbert.

It would create a“super premium” single malt called Hearach - the Gaelic term for a native resident of Harris.

Up to around 20 local jobs would be created at its seasonal height, it is proposed.

Unlike some larger distilleries, it intends to mature and bottle the whisky on the island rather than ship it out to mainland bases for the finishing process, in a bid to create extra employment on Harris.

Between 200,000 to 300,000 bottles could be produced annually using water tumbling down the nearby rocky hillside between two reservoirs on the East Tarbert burn. Exports for the mature malt will target Japan and the USA
