Parts of Harris are without electricity until later on Thursday morning after power cuts in the area.

Hydro squads have been out in the cold and dark since early evening trying to fix the issue.

However, with wind speeds over 50mph, and set to increase to almost 60mph overnight, they have been instructed to suspend work for safety reasons.

Households from Ardhasaig and Ceann An Ora down to Amhuinnsuidhe and Hushinish are still affected. Part of the Bays of Harris were also in darkness.

Islanders have been offered overnight accommodation in Tarbert by the SSE’s power distribution division, SSEN.

A SSEN spokesperson said: “Due to high winds in the area, we are unable to complete the necessary repairs to restore power this evening.

“We expect repairs to be completed and power to be restored by 10am tomorrow morning.

“We’re sorry for any inconvenience this may cause and thank you for your patience at this time.”

The power company said people who are still without power can go to the Harris Hotel or the Hotel Hebrides for food and a night's stay.

SSEN will reimburse any customers who can provide a receipt.
