Residents in Harris have voiced fears that the out-of-hours GP service is not working after a series of incidents.

Health board bosses are expected to attend a public meeting over medical arrangements on the island tonight (Mon), arranged by local community councils.

Since last October, the GP surgery in North Harris does not make house calls at night nor weekends.

Instead, patients are told to make their way to the nearest cover in Stornoway on Lewis - a return journey of up to 120 miles.

Some patients have had to endure the trip in bad weather in the middle of the night to attend the out-of-hours doctor based at the Western Isles Hospital.

John Macleod, chairman of the North Harris Community Council, says there should be an overnight nurse based within Harris to avoid the pitfalls of long distance cover from Stornoway.

He says residents are worried about a series of “near misses.”

Mr Macleod said the “distance and time factor is causing anxiety” while some patients were reluctant to call for help and “suffering unnecessarily” until the local surgery re-opened.

Western Isles NHS medical director, Dr Angus McKellar, and the interim clinical lead officer for primary care, Dr Keith Burns, are expected to attend tonight’s meeting at 7.30pm in Tarbert Community Centre.
