Woman in loch crash is named                25/11/11

A young woman who died in a car crash on Harris has been named as Lorna Macdonald, 26, of Cross Street, Stornoway.

Ms Macdonald was a speech therapist with Western Isles NHS based at the Stornoway hospital.

She died after her vehicle left the road and landed in Loch na Uidhean as she was driving north on the road near Horascleit Lodge, between Leverburgh and Tarbert on Thursday afternoon.

A passerby raised the alarm around 4pm and the emergency services carried out an extensive recovery operation which included police, a local coastguard shore team, and  Leverburgh and Tarbert fire crews.

She was taken to Western Isles Hospital in Stornoway where she was pronounced dead.

Northern Constabulary’s traffic accident investigation team arrived on the island to examine the scene today.

Gordon Jamieson, chief executive of Western Isles NHS said: “The loss of Lorna is a shocking tragedy. Our thoughts are with her family at this really sad time.”

He added: “When I got the news I was absolutely stunned. Lorna has worked with us for a while now and I know her colleagues are truly saddened.”
