Missing hillwalker found after major search     10/9/14

A missing hillwalker has been found after a major land and air search in Harris.

The 62-year-man spent the night outdoors on the Clisham after getting separated from his companions when low cloud descended as they were climbing the Clisham yesterday (Tues) afternoon.

They raised the alarm around 3.30pm and an extensive search got underway.

Hebrides Search and Rescue team, coastguard volunteer personnel staff and an RAF search and rescue helicopter scoured the area.

The search was called off due to poor visibility at midnight.

Search parties were dropped back on the mountain at 7.30am this morning (Wed) by Stornoway coastguard helicopter and the man - a visitor to the island - was found about an hour later.

He was airlifted to a waiting ambulance at Stornoway airport and taken to hospital.

The man is believed to have been treated for mild hypothermia.
