Local school pupils including Ellen Olley, Rachael Cameron and Rowan Chaffer (above) of Leverburgh School enjoyed the trophy’s visit.

The world-famous Ryder Cup trophy was greeted by a large crowd as it arrived at the Scarista golf course in Harris by helicopter.

The cup touched down as part of the Official Trophy Tour of Scotland being delivered by VisitScotland and Ryder Cup Europe. Numerous people lined up to get their photo taken with the trophy.

The Isle of Harris Golf Club was selected for the visit as it is the very first club in the Western Isles to take part in the ClubGolf junior initiative, a junior golf development programme created as a legacy of the 2014 Ryder Cup tournament taking place in Scotland for the first time in 40 years.

The cup was also on display at Stornoway Golf Club clubhouse for an hour on Monday evening.

Alan MacKenzie, island manager at VisitScotland said the visit recognises club golf across the country and the hard work and efforts all the people working on in local clubs.

He added: “While representing the various legacy benefits associated with hosting The Ryder Cup in Scotland, including junior golf, golf tourism, golf events and Green Drive, The Ryder Cup Trophy brings with it a real sense of excitement, drama and prestige. This is Scotland’s year, our chance to secure a legacy and showcase Scotland as the Home of Golf.”
