The local fishing industry would be hit if a Comhairle budget proposal to increase dues at council-owned harbours goes ahead warns a report.

Hiking up the charges could take in an extra £50,000 over the next two years.

However, this would require an increase of approximately 4.7%.

Previous price increases have included a 10% increase - phased in over two years.

The council report warned the "fishing sector is under pressure from marine protected areas and may see any increased costs as further pressure on a fragile industry."

The proposal to increase income through higher pier and harbour dues would bring the service "in line with other similar ports," according to the report.

Ferry operator Cal Mac may seek "justification for increased costs" for increased wharfage charges at the council-owned harbour at Lochmaddy.

The report notes that "marine services staffing levels are being assessed as part of a structural review.

"From the recent audit, it is likely that this review will recommend that staffing levels are increased. Under normal circumstances, harbour dues would be increased to provide funding for increased staffing."
