Harbour board boss quits           28/10/14

The chairman of Stornoway Port Authority has resigned following claims he was in breach of procedural guidelines.

Capt Angus Smith offered to leave in the interests of the harbour board at a meeting held tonight (Tues), said a statement from harbour chief executive, Jane Maciver.

On Friday, board directors found he breached procedural guidelines, added the statement.

Details are unclear but it is thought the circumstances involved straying outside the strict procedures over a proposal for a piece of low value work the harbour board was considering undertaking.

It is understood there is no suggestion Mr Smith would have made any financial gain.

Ms Maciver stressed: “The board wish to make it clear that no tender was received from any local engineer, no contract had been awarded, and no financial or other benefit had accrued.

“The board expressed its appreciation for the work that Mr Smith has done on behalf of the port authority in his four and a half years as a board member.”
