Guga hunters have landed            1/9/14

The Ness guga hunters have landed on Sùla Sgeir to start their annual fowling expedition.

Over the next fortnight the ten men will scale the sheer-sided cliffs to pluck the young gannets from the rock face in defiance of flying attacks from the screeching parent birds.

A rolling swell threatened to hamper attempts to land on the rock, some 40 miles north of Lewis, but the squad got safely ashore on Frida.

The cull is the last remaining wild bird hunt of its kind in the UK and is limited to a maximum limit of 2000 birds under a special licence from the Scottish Government.
