A cargo ship has come to Stornoway to be examined after running aground while sailing through the Minch.

The alarm was raised at 3.45am on Sunday morning after the MV BBC Marmara grounded on Eilean Trodday, off Skye, in fog.

Her bow suffered some damage causing the ship to take on water.

The ship's salvage pumps were set up to discharge the incoming water.

The Madeira-flagged 11-year-old heavy lift and general cargo ship vessel departed Foynes in Ireland on Friday afternoon and was heading to Scrabster near Wick on the north coast of Scotland.

She grounded while navigating through a channel between Eilean Fladda Chuain and Eilean Trodday.

Portree lifeboat launched to the scene and provided support "in case there was any need to evacuate" crew members off stricken ship said a spokesperson for UK Coastguard.

The vessel refloated soon after the grounding and continued on its course.

The lifeboat headed after the casualty and crew went onboard to assist in carrying out a thorough inspection of the ship for damage.

However, a "decision was taken" to divert to Stornoway before clearing the Minch to assess her hull for damage said coastguards.

Her skipper altered course to port and steamed to Lewis, anchoring outside Arnish lighthouse. Divers are to check her underwater structure to ascertain the extent of damage.

Coastguard emergency tug, MV Ievoli Black, escorted the 116-metre-long vessel to the anchorage.
