Sir,

Whilst on the subject of wintry conditions and icy roads, last week my daughter at two of her friends found themselves (through no fault of their own) suspended upside-down in her car as it hit a sheet of ice, went off the road and overturned on the Newmarket to Tong road, leaving the car written off.

When inquiring as to why there was no gritters out, they were told by our council that no gritting takes place after 4pm.

Again we see lives put at risk because of the total incompetence of those in council transportation office who take such decisions. Fortunately the girls were not hurt, but were pretty shaken up.

I feel the need to highlight this so that the public are made aware of dangerous consequences arising from untreated roads. As for the roads themselves, they were in better condition 40 years ago, we find every village with atrocious potholes that no suspension with withstand and verges collapsing, ditches uncleansed, I could go on.

Yes, they will mention budget restraints and every other conceivable excuse under the sun, for me, its high time the public who use and pay for road costs, in return inherit roads that are safe to drive on. I wonder if our councillors will take note. Probably not.
