A Royal Navy bomb squad from Faslane is on its way to deal with an explosive device washed ashore on Lewis.

The expert team is expected to blow up the ordnance which was found lying on the sand at Gress Beach on Sunday morning.

A large section of shore and machair stretching from the main road by Gress Cemetery to the sea has been cordoned off.

It is understood a local spotted the device while out for a morning stroll across the popular beach.

The bomb squad will travel over by ferry and are expected to arrive on the island over the next couple of days.

Police officers are positioned on high grassland at a safe distance while guarding the scene during squalls of rain and cold winds

Islanders and sightseers are urged to keep away from the location.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: “Stornoway Police currently have a cordon in place at Gress Beach, at Back, Isle of Lewis.

“A small item which appears to be unexploded ordnance has been recovered on the beach.

“Police will maintain the cordon until the item has been safely disposed of and request members of the public to stay away from the area.”
