Local company wins “food oscar” award       24/8/14

Smoked salmon produced in the Hebrides has been awarded a Great Taste award, in the world’s largest blind-tasting competition.

Oak Smoked Salmon from the Loch Duart Artisan Smokehouse in South Uist was awarded two stars after being assessed by 16 judges.

Known as the “food oscars,” Great Taste is widely acknowledged as the most respected food accreditation scheme for artisan and speciality food producers.

All products were blind-tasted by panels of specialists including top chefs, cookery writers, food critics, restaurateurs and fine food retailers.

Established in 1994, the scheme encourages and mentors artisan food producers,  leading to an independent accreditation that enables small food and drink businesses to compete against supermarket premium own label brands.

Fiona Macdonald, sales manager at the Loch Duart smokehouse said: “We are delighted to see our Oak Smoked Salmon on the list of winners this year – it is a great boost for the whole team and a reward for another year of hard work.

“We use Loch Duart Salmon exclusively for our smoked products and this gives us a great taste advantage to begin with.”
