The Comhairle's crofting representatives have tackled Crofting Commission chiefs over the common grazings row where the commission has been accused of being heavy-handed with village groups..

The council-led crofting sector committee discussed the controversy with the commission's convenor, Colin Kennedy,  and its chief executive, Catriona Maclean. Western Isles commissioner, Murdo MacLennan, was also present.

Committee chairman, Uisdean Robertson, said the meeting was productive and many current issues were debated at length.

The forum concluded that village grazings committees are allowed to retain appropriate funds in their accounts to carry out planned works on the shared grazings.

"This is an important clarification from the commission and will help reassure common grazings committees," highlighted the committee.

Both sides agreed a change in the law is "urgently required." The Comhairle pledged to press for an early review of the legislation.

The Comhairle committed to considering the issues at a future meeting of its sustainable development committee - which is not expected to occur before September.

It said it would also work through "other forums in order to address the issues discussed as a matter of urgency."
