The organisers of the Royal National Mòd have been awarded a Scottish Government grant to help develop their programme of work.

Dr Alasdair Allan, Minister for Gaelic, announced the award of £26,280 ahead of the Mòd returning to Oban this October.

An Comunn Gàidhealach will use the grant to support the Mòd and competitors who will be travelling to Oban to compete.

Part of the grant will also be used to carry out repairs to the Neil Munro monument in Inveraray.

Neil Munro authored several works, most famously the Para Handy series, which celebrated the exploits of the crew of the Vital Spark, as well as a number of historical novels.

Dr Allan said: “We are very pleased to continue to support the work of the An Comunn Gàidhealach, ahead of the Mòd returning to Oban. The Scottish Government is proud to be associated with the programme.

“The Neil Munro monument is a worthy tribute to a great Scottish literary talent and were he around today, I am sure Neil Munro would be thrilled to see the Royal National Mòd at the heart of celebrating everything that is great about Gaelic music and culture.”

John Morrison, chief executive of An Comunn Gàidhealach, said the body was "proud to renew our association with Argyll’s best known author, the late Neil Munro.

"The repairs to the monument that commemorates Neil Munro’s life is an affirmation that we remember all those who made such a valuable contribution to the culture, language and music of the Gaels of Scotland.”
