Scottish Labour's candidate for Na h-Eileanan an Iar, Rhoda Grant, has voiced concerns about the Scottish Government's "dubious" handling of a proposal to alter legislation on freshwater angling.

Mrs Grant said: "A large number of people have told me of their disquiet about the management of angling by the Scottish Government. The new catch and release requirements were railroaded through as the SNP used its majority to force it through without consulting with the anglers and angling clubs who will be affected.

"There is no scientific base for these regulations to be introduced. The Scottish Government is now consulting, under the cover of a parliamentary election. The arrogance of such behaviour is breathtaking. A number of taxes on anglers, a rod tax and a tax on catches will be imposed."

Mrs Grant continued: "In years gone by angling was the preserve of the rich, that has changed with angling clubs now making the sport accessible to the masses. The Scottish Government however appears to wish to turn back time, by now making it inaccessible to many who enjoy the sport without a by your leave.

"Sadly however this is the arrogance we have come to expect from the SNP, and again, their representative on these islands has sat on his hands and ignored the concerns which were brought before him."
