An island GP has been awarded a MBE in the Queen's birthday honours list.

Dr Andrew Naylor, who is married to Una, is the permanent doctor at the single-handed practice based in Leverburgh.

The award recognises his commitment to medical services for around 600 patients across the scattered South Harris community.

The 54-year-old praised his practice staff and colleagues, past and present, for their hard work and support.

The doctor is unusual by continuing to operate his own out-of-hours medical attention, going out in the middle of the night to attend the sick people.

Dr Naylor said: "Its something I signed up for when I started but I could not have sustained round-the-clock care for patients without the support of my family who don't mind getting phone calls day or night."

While "challenging" the work has its rewards and he feels "privileged" to be part of the lives of many people in the district

He added: "I'm also thankful to be part of the community and the spiritual aspect of the community is very important to me. I am thankful, above all to the Lord who has sustained and kept me through these years."
