Golf Club hires lawyer over Sunday drinks row     13/8/10

 

 

 

 

Stornoway Golf Club is consulting with lawyers as it considers taking Western Isles Licensing Board to court.

 

The golf club is considering appealing against the licensing board refusal to grant it a daytime Sunday drinks licence. It was the second time within weeks that the licensing board rejected a proposal to serve drinks with Sunday lunches at the clubhouse.

 

The club’s management committee discussed the issue last night and decided to seek legal advice.

 

A club spokesman said: “Stornoway Golf Club will be consulting with legal representatives with regard to an appeal against the recent decision of the Western Isles Licensing Board, not to approve their application, and have until August 30th to do so.”

 

He added: “A further statement will be issued next week when the results of these consultations have been analysed and the decision on the best way forward concluded by it's management committee.”

Western Isles Licensing Board had voted 6-4 to knock back its bid to sell alcohol with Sunday lunches and TV sports events.  The island club is already banned from playing golf on the Sabbath and wanted to boost its takings by the weekend bar trade.

 

The same licensing panel rejected an identical application in May.

 

The club is anxious to separate the Sunday drinks bid from the controversial issue of playing the course on the same day.

 

Now the golf club will consider appealing its case to the Sheriff Principal. The licensing board However, it is still open to apply a third time to the licensing board, though it is widely thought they risk receiving the same response.
