Hebrides News

A Western Isles youngster who was effectively stateless has now been confirmed as a British citizen.

The girl was brought up by her father until he died.

Since then she has been cared for by her dad’s parents in the Hebrides.

Despite being born in Scotland the Home Office refused to automatically consider her as a British citizen.

They demanded her mother’s birth certificate which was not available as the mum is not in the girl’s life.

Following a successful intervention by Isles MP Angus MacNeil, the situation has been resolved.

Mr MacNeil took the case up with Immigration Minister Brandon Lewis.

Angus MacNeil said he is “absolutely delighted” at the outcome.

He added: “When I raised this with Brandon Lewis MP, Immigration Minister, he told me that he was looking at this case personally and he has kept to his word.

“The family are now in the process of completing the passport application and they remain in contact with the Home Office, who are continuing to assist them with this process.”

Grandparents of the schoolgirl said: “This has been a very long and stressful experience for us all.

“We are delighted that our MP Angus MacNeil intervened on our behalf and continued to keep pressure on the Home Office and we want to publicly thank Angus MacNeil for all of his assistance.”
