Gales disrupt ferry services   19/1/12

Western Isles ferry services face possible disruption until the weekend due to bad weather.

Many services were affected today due to heavy winds and rough seas. The Clansman did not sail from Oban to Lochboisdale and Castlebay but - if conditions ease - she is due to undertake an additional sailing departing Oban at 5.30am tomorrow morning.

The MV Isle of Lewis is weather bound in Stornoway after cancelling her return afternoon run to Ullapool. The next sailing is hoped to be at 7am tomorrow.

The MV Hebrides sailed for Tarbert nearly 50 minutes early in a bid to beat the weather.

The Sound of Harris ferry was cancelled today but is pencilled in to resume her timetable tomorrow.

The Force 8 gale affecting the Hebrides is expected to ease overnight. However, westerly winds are due to pick up again on from Friday evening.

A strong gale and rain will batter the islands on Saturday when gust up to hurricane strength are expected.
