Snowstorm Nemo rains on the Hebrides         12/2/13

High winds up to severe gale 9 may affect the Western Isles on Wednesday as the tail-end of the snow storm which brought chaos to Canada and north-east America arrives on this side of the Atlantic.

Huge areas were blanketed by one-metre towering banks of snow as blizzards raged across the eastern states of North America.

Over a dozen people are said to have died as a result of the storm while powercuts blacked out an estimated 600,000 properties.

Transport systems ground to a halt and airports were shut resulting in the cancellation of thousands of flights.

Though Nemo Continuing has dramatically weakened in the last couple of days, it has prompted a severe cold weather warning in England and mainland Scotland.

However, Western Isles is expected to escape the brunt of the snow and ice which is said to affect the rest of the UK and will get a regular Hebridean gale instead, accompanied by rain and rough seas.

Locally, the worst of the weather will affect the Southern Isles.

The MV Clansman is liable to disruption on her sailing from Oban on Wednesday warns Cal Mac.

Wednesday morning’s freight service between Ullapool and Stornoway is cancelled due to adverse weather.

The ferry service on the Sound of Harris is on amber alert due to the forecast and liable to disruption/delay at short notice.
