Strong winds and gales are developing over the Western Isles from Sunday night.

Gusts of 50mph are forecast over Monday with a southerly gale bringing bouts of heavy rain over the day.

Gale conditions are expected to continue on Tuesday though wind direction changes to blow from the west. The day will feel colder but drier with less outbreaks of rain.

Strong winds will whip up rough seas with high waves forecast, particularly east of South Uist and Barra, off the Butt of Lewis as well as down the western coast of the islands.

Ferry services on exposed routes are likely to be affected.
