Isles MSP, Alasdair Allan, has voted in favour of legislation which enacts a long-called for entitlement to Gaelic medium primary education where reasonable demand exists.

The bill passed by the Scottish Parliament promotes Gaelic education by placing a duty on local councils to assess the need for Gaelic medium primary education following a parental request and to actively promote the language in schools.

Alasdair Allan, who is also the Gaelic minister, said: "This legislation ensures that parents throughout Scotland who want to see a Gaelic medium unit established in their local primary school, have a formal means by which to pursue this.

"While legislation is by no means everything that is needed to help the Gaelic language, I hope this piece of new legislation, passed by the parliament will put the rights of Gaelic in our schools on a much more formal footing than at any time in the past.”
