People opposed to the closure of Lionel secondary school have three weeks to lodge representations against the Comhairle’s decision.

A possible last ditch chance to prevent the closure lies in the hands of the Scottish Government, if it uses its right to call-in the case.

The Comhairle has officially notified the Scottish Government of its controversial vote to shut the Lionel S1/S2 school.

It said people can make representation to Scottish Ministers to schoolclosure@scotland.gsi.gov.uk

Education Minister Angela Constance is now obliged to consider all public representations against closure - which can include criticisms of the process or doubts over the council’s figures - she receives up to 4 March.

People who made earlier objections during the consultation period are entitled to make further representations.

If the decision is called-in, an independent panel of about 10 people will review the closure.

At present, the review panel has not been filled though Ian Nisbet, Head of Education Law at Govan Law Centre, has been appointed chairman.

Lionel secondary school is due to shut at the end of term in June. Affected pupils will be bussed to the Nicolson Institute in Stornoway.
