Organisers behind a coast path route in Point have welcomed a £81,000 Scottish Government grant to develop the next steps of their trail.

The cash will be used to install a walking route between Shulishader to Flesherin.

The volunteer group - Point and Sandwick Community Coastal Path (PSCCP)  charity aims to developing an 40km circular route from the Stornoway ferry terminal through Sandwick and around the peninsula of Point.

This community endeavour aims to develop the trail to showcase the historic, cultural and natural attractions in the area and has already delivered significant improvements to sections at Steinish, Shulishader Steps and erosion works to support the perimeter of the mediaeval Ui Church at the Braighe. Some paths will be well surfaced while other sections will be marker posts on rough moorland.

PSCCP chairman, Matt Bruce, said funding award is “really exciting.”

He added: The initial concept for the path was suggested by retired teacher Tom Clark and we thank him for his inspiration. We are grateful to our funders and to Point and Sandwick Trust who have helped us access publicly available funding and offered technical advice and support at every step of the way.”
