A backlog of heating oil deliveries are now being made to Lewis and Harris households who were unable to top up since earlier this month.

Filling stations also feared they would run out of petrol and diesel as supplies ran low.

The fuel shortage was caused by delays in the sea tanker coming to island.

There was a further delay on the ship docking due to strong easterly winds at the end of last week and she waited at anchor for suitable weather.

Distributor Certas Energy said the fuel shortage was the result of a “significant delay” to the planned chartered delivery.

Refinery Phillips 66 manages the shipping programme for sea tankers.

The Stornoway storage tanks are now replenished and road tanker drivers are “now busy catching up on orders.”
