Fisherman dies after falling overboard      8/1/12

A fisherman has died after falling overboard from a French trawler off Lewis in the early hours of this morning.

The French vessel Jean Claude Coulon II raised the alarm after 2.06am about 50 miles north west off the Butt of Lewis.

The Stornoway coastguard rescue helicopter was scrambled. Communications were conducted with the assistance of the French Coastguard at the Gris Nez rescue co-ordination centre.

Carol Collins, Watch Manager Stornoway Coastguard said: "The fisherman was recovered by the crew of the fishing vessel.

“The vessel then made its way to Stornoway Harbour where it was met by the appropriate authorities. The casualty has been pronounced deceased by a medic on scene.”
