Milder conditions and rain showers are forecast to provide a temporary relief from icy weather in the Western Isles.

A ridge of high pressure and northerly winds brought low temperatures as well as snow and hail today.

The Met Office has issued yellow “be aware” alerts of icy weather over the week.

Forecasters said wintry showers may affect the islands through the rest of the day with icy stretches likely to form overnight into mid morning tomorrow leading to an increased risk of injuries and accidents.

A south westerly air flow over Wednesday will bring milder weather and rain showers to melt away any lying snow.

But chilly conditions are expected to return from Thursday evening with wet roads and paths turning icy and slippery.

A fall in temperatures will follow a periods of rain, sleet and hill snow into Friday. Some heavy spells of snow may be experienced on Friday morning.
