Hebrides News

The Met Office has issued a yellow "be aware" warning of snow and ice for the Western Isles.

The peak of the wintry conditions will follow on from the storm easing to gale level.

Sleet or snow showers this afternoon, particularly in the northern part of the Hebrides, will precede the official warning period which cover between 6pm and tomorrow afternoon.

The Met Office said gales are also expected with some gusts of 70mph across northern and western Scotland at times.

Road surface temperatures are expected to fall below freezing Friday night into Saturday morning, bringing some icy patches.

An additional hazard is ice accretion on overhead cables and some disruption to power supplies, whilst lightning may also lead to disruption.

Frequent wintry showers, heavy at times, are expected across the Western Isles and the Highlands during Saturday.

The heaviest snow showers are most likely northwest of the Central Belt of Scotland. Here, away from the immediate coast, around 5-10 cm of snow could accumulate.

Elsewhere, snow accumulations will be more localised, with around 2-5 cm possible, primarily above 100 metres.

In affected areas, drifting of snow is likely in strong to gale force winds with local blizzard conditions, particularly on high ground.
