A pool of 12 e-bikes held at Aros an Rubha in Point, Lewis, is now fully available for people to come and try their hand at electric powered cycling.
Purchased as part of a scheme by Point and Sandwick Trail, the bikes will be out and about at two upcoming, free sessions for people to give e-biking a try.
Point and Sandwick trail ranger, Steve Gillion is running the free sessions at Stornoway auction mart on Saturday 20th April and again the following Saturday at Tiumpan Community Centre in Aird, Point.
“People just have to come along and we’ll find the right bike for them to get going.” said Steve.
“We’ve had so much positive feedback from the people who have already been along to try the bikes with lots of fun and motivation to get out and into biking. The e-bikes give just the right amount of pedal power to mean that anyone can have a go.
We had the team from Sandwick Bay Candles come and try the bikes as well as local people recovering from serious health conditions which has been amazing.
“Because of that extra boost of power, the e-bikes help with gentle recovery from injury or illness, improve fitness and offer a fun way to get around the community, even for those who thought their cycling days might have been behind them!”
Point and Sandwick Trail offer e-bikes for short and long-term loan, free of charge to local people living in the area but over-14’s from across Lewis are encouraged to take this chance to try e-biking at the two upcoming events.
Local wind farm charity Point and Sandwick Trust (PST) are closely involved in the project.
Community consultant Alasdair Nicholson who worked to get funding and purchase the e-bikes said: “All the hard work to raise funding, purchase the e-bikes and roll out the scheme in the last few years is now starting to pay off. It’s great to see Steve running these sessions for people to come along and try out e-biking and even better, the bikes are available for short- and long-term loan to members of the Point and Sandwick communities.”Funding for project came from a number of sources including Point and Sandwick Trust, Highlands and Islands Enterprise and the Energy Savings Trust.
