Four islanders have received honours in the King's Birthday Honours List.
Lorna and John Norgrove (pictured) of Lewis are each awarded an OBE for their work
with the Linda Norgrove Foundation, the humanitarian charity set up in memory of
their daughter to help women and children in Afghanistan.
Also receiving an OBE is Angus Campbell of South Uist, for services to the Scottish
Fishing Industry. Mr Campbell is manager of Kilbride Shellfish, a processing and
marketing organisation for local creel fishermen, handling lobster and crabs at its
Ludag base for export to UK and continental markets.
Community stalwart and manager of the Point and Sandwick Trust (PST), Donald John
Macsween, receives an MBE for services to the community of the Western Isles. Mr
Macsween is a former councillor for the Sgìre an Rubha ward, and was previously chief
executive of An Comunn Gaidhealach, organisers of the Royal National Mod.
Western Isles Lord- Lieutenant Iain Macaulay congratulated all the recipients.
He said: “I extend my congratulations to them all and thank them for everything that
they do for our community and beyond.
Their individual achievements, whether through the Linda Norgrove Foundation by helping
and protecting women and children in Afghanistan, developing and supporting the shellfish
and fishing industry over many years or planning and delivering community projects
and renewable energy initiatives, are a matter of great pride to the communities
of the Western Isles.”
He added: “The Honours system gives national recognition to people who have given
exceptional service in public and community life and are committed to making a difference
to those around them. It is therefore extremely pleasing that so many exceptional
individuals from the Western Isles have been named in this year's HM Birthday honours
list.”
Iain Macaulay concluded “All the awards are well-deserved and we are extremely grateful
for everything that they have done, and continue to do, in their various areas of
focus, dedication and commitment, locally and much wider afield.”
