A blanket of fog caused chaos for Western Isles transport services today.

 

Thick mist reduced visibility below safety levels at island airports.

 

Benbecula and Barra flights were cancelled in both directions.

 

Disrupted plane passengers heading north made it to Stornoway after the crew of the MV Loch Portain held back the ferry before their final voyage of the day across the Sound of Harris.

 

At Stornoway airport, a number of flights were delayed until conditions cleared with Glasgow-bound travellers hoping to arrive in the central belt after 10pm tonight
