The Lewis “oilworkers flight” was forced to turn back to Aberdeen today due to a blanket of fog over Stornoway airport.

It is understood the Eastern Airways plane was approaching the island when the decision was made that restricted visibility could make landing hazardous.

There were 20 passengers and three crew on board.

An airline spokesperson said: “The 12.45pm flight from Aberdeen to Stornoway had to turn back this afternoon due to the weather conditions in Stornoway, which resulted in poor visibility.”

“Eastern Airways apologies to passengers for any inconvenience but unfortunately the weather is beyond the airline’s control.”

The delayed flight is due to take off later.
