Prizewinners at Mod’s children competitions       15/10/14

 

Younger islanders are enjoying continued success at the Royal National Mod in Inverness this week.

 

Amongst the haul of trophies heading across the Minch is the .John Niven Anderson Memorial Trophy scooped by the West Side Gaelic Initiative group ‘Tairneanaich’, winners of the Open Play U19 competition.

 

First in the Folk Group Open under-19-years event was Lewis group Faram 2 who will bring home The Allan Thomas Mitchell Trophy; while Point’s Cailegeagan Beaga an Rubha were the Silver Medal winners of the Folk Group Open U13 competition.

 

The islands’ solo singers also did fantastically well with John Angus Morrison from Coisir Og an Rubha taking The Dr Archie MacKinnon (Islay) Memorial Trophy for his win in Solo Singing Learner Boys 9-10.

 

John Angus also brings home The Donald MacLeod Trophy for highest marks in Gaelic in two competitions.

 

Another singing trophy was awarded to Nicolson Institute pupil Isabelle Bain who came first in Solo Singing Open U19 to scoop the Skelmorlie Highlanders Association Quaich.

 

Bronze Medal in the Solo Singing Learner Girls 13-15 was taken by Caitlin MacKenzie from The Nicolson Institute; and in Solo Singing Learner Girls 11-12 Stornoway Primary’s Juliet McKenzie also came third and was awarded the Dunoon Observer and Argyllshire Standard Medal as well as her Bronze Medal.

 

And Kirsty Nicolson, from Coisir Og an Rubha, came third equal with Floriana Lawrence from Mull in the Solo Singing Learner Girls 9-10.

 

The island lads also proved successful with Murray Begg from Sgoil Lacasdail taking the bronze medal in both the Solo Singing Learner 5-6 and Poetry Recitation Learner 5-6 competitions.

 

Sgoil an Rubha’s Oscar Tormod Fish took third in Solo Singing Learner Boys 11-12 and the Dunoon Observer and Argyllshire Standard Medal.

 

And Oscar combined his talents with those of Juliet McKenzie from Stornoway Primary to win the Duet Learner U13 competition and bring home The Angus MacTavish Memorial Trophy.
