Flags will fly at half-mast at the Comhairle's offices in tribute of Jo Cox, the Labour MP for Batley and Spen, who died after being shot and stabbed in her home constituency in West Yorkshire on Thursday.

Political parties have suspended campaigning for European referendum.

The UK Parliament has been recalled to a special session on Monday to pay tribute to Mrs Cox.

The Western Isles Labour Party has expressed its shock at the killing of the 41-year-old mother-of-two.

A spokesperson said: "Our Labour family is grieving after one of our own was brutally and senselessly taken from us yesterday.

"We will not be campaigning this weekend as we take time to reflect on events and to remember Jo."

Comhairle nan Eilean Siar said flags will be lowered on Monday as a mark of respect to the slain MP.

Council convener, Norman Macdonald, will pass on the condolences of the Comhairle to the speaker of the House of Commons.
