A fisherman has severed his thumb after an accident onboard a trawler off the Western Isles.

The casualty requires specialist surgery at a mainland hospital.

It is understood he is being transferred to hospital in Glasgow.

The accident happened onboard the French vessel, MFV Julien Coléou, which was working fishing grounds about 60 miles west of Barra.

Stornoway coastguard helicopter landed him at the Western Isles Hospital.

The man will be flown to Glasgow for treatment later on Monday.

MFV Julien Coléou belongs to the Scapêche fleet, the largest fishing boat owner in France. She is a regular visitor to Stornoway for stores and crew changes.
