Around 400 people attended Barra’s Fishermen’s Mass on Sunday.

The annual event in Castlebay reinforces how vital fishing is for the 1,100-strong island population.

Mass was led by Father John Paul Mackinnon took and was followed by a Gaelic choir singing the final hymn, Reul Alainn a' Chuain (Star of the Sea) and the traditional blessing of the boats ceremony

Local fishing vessels “dressed” in flags and bunting packed out the harbour and many in the crowd board the trawlers for the boat race which this year went round the cruise ship MV Corinthian anchored out in the bay.

MFV Our Pride won the prize for the best dressed boat. Skipper Alexander MacNeill is pictured with his sons Rory and Darren, holding the plaque, as well as their friend James.
