Island fisherman dies after falling overboard

5 October 2015

A 42-year-old fisherman has died after falling overboard a fishing boat.

Gerard Gillies, who hailed from Vatersay, fell from the two-man creel boat, FV Annie T, when fishing around the Bishop's Isles.

His fellow crewman rescued him from the water within a few minutes.

Mr Gillies - known locally as Gerry - was transferred to Barra lifeboat and landed at Castlebay harbour.

He was urgently flown for emergency treatment to the Western Isles Hospital in Stornoway by the coastguard rescue helicopter.

He died in hospital at 4.30pm.

Police said there were no suspicious circumstances and a report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal.
