The arrival of passenger liner, MV Astoria, officially began Stornoway’s cruise season today.

The 16,144 tonne vessel's 486 passengers took coach tours around the island or shopped for souvenirs in the town.

The ship was scheduled to come in last month but bypassed the port due to choppy seas.

Stornoway harbour master, Tony Morrison, presented her skipper, Captain Filipe Sousa, with a handmade Harris Tweed plaque and a hamper with various local delicacies.

The large draft of the vessel mean she anchored off Sandwick with tenders ferrying passengers ashore.

The vessel depart for Kirkwall at 5pm.

The Astoria, operated under charter by Cruise and Maritime Voyages, is the world’s oldest active ocean going cruise ship.

She launched in 1946 as the MV Stockholm and has had many different names through various owners over her seven decades of service.

Until recently she was known as the Azores and was renamed for this season.

The next cruise ship, MV Marco Polo, is due in on Tuesday morning.
