Three fire crews attended a hill fire at Askernish, South Uist, into the early hours of this morning (Tuesday).

The heather was well alight when the alarm was raised shortly before 9pm last night (Monday).

Lochboisdale fire crew were first on the scene followed by a team from Benbecula. The Bayhead crew from North Uist were also called out.

The ground was ablaze with firefighters encountering a 200-metre-long front of flames whipped up by the brisk wind.

As the fire advanced, hydro personnel were summoned due to the risk to the power lines running through the area.
