Flames destroyed a bedroom in the one and a half storey terraced house, in front of the local health centre.
Smoke damage affected other parts of the house.
Emergency services attended the incident when the alarm was raised around 9.50pm on Wednesday night.
Two fire teams from Stornoway were assisted by the Shawbost crew in bringing the fire under control.
Seventeen firefighters attended, using six breathing apparatus sets and water jets.
An ambulance took the householder to hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.
Police cordoned off a section of road during the incident.
